Knitted Artwork - Remnant
Lauren TausendOne of a kind knitted textile artwork by Lauren Tausend.
Framed in a Vic Ash with hanging wire. Measuring 99cm x 68cm x 6cm.
Machine knitted using wool, silk, cotton, linen and other miscellaneous yarns. These yarns have been either naturally dyed, sourced from mill end or dead stock, locally sourced or acquired second hand.
Remnant forms part of the Migration series exhibited at Off The Kerb Gallery in July 2020. The Migration series references aerial views of the Victorian landscape. Taking inspiration from the texture, shape and movement of the rivers, bush land, and mountains in and around the areas I call home. Experiencing the journey of moving from one home to another and the push and pull between living in the city but always being drawn back to the country and the coast. Exploring these concepts through the process of knitting, where each individual stitch cannot be undone once knitted. These knitting paintings tell a story of my ever-changing interactions with the surrounding environment.

About the Artist - Lauren Tausend
My focus is on the process of story-telling through traditionally craft based practices. Craft and predominantly knitting play a huge part in my connection to family and home, and is the inspiration for my exploration of textiles. I love the accessibility of craft and my goal is to push those ideas to a place which intersects with art and design.
Completing a degree in Textile Design at RMIT in 2015 and having experiences working in fashion, homewares, knitwear, screen printing and costume design, my work has an organic and playful approach with a strong connection to the handmade. Exploring texture, shape and colour through fibre and illustration.
Having exhibited my first solo show 'Migration' in 2020 at Off The Kerb Gallery with a collection of knitting paintings, I’m excited to pursue this idea to places bigger and fuzzier than before. Stay tuned!
Growing up in country Victoria, I'm always desperate to escape the city and return to the bush and the coast. Taking inspiration from the texture and movement of the landscape and our interactions within that space.
I'm available for textile commissions, collaborations, craft projects and freelance opportunities. If you're like to work together or just say hi please send me an email at hello@laurentausend.com.
